Climbing in Cuba

Climbing in Cuba is special, not only because of the peculiar secondary formations of the rock that make the climber move in ways he has probably never moved before, but because every visitor gets hooked with the cuban hospitality and humanity and their magnificent culture.

Jibacoa Climbing Zone

A new climbing area has been opened in Jibacoa, a few meters from the beach and very close to Campismo Los Cocos and Hotel Villa Loma.

La Costanera

Sector “The Costanera” has some of the best routes to Cuba, its walls are perfect and they stay in the shade all day long. The sector has several walls, one of them is Silvia´s wall, where routes are excellent quality with various degrees of difficulty, beginning at 5º cough up to 8 º.

Proyecto Skala+

Skala + The project is an initiative that seeks to promote the extension and rock climbing in Cuba, Skala + has already begun a significant group of children and youth in sport in different parts of the country. The opening of new climbing areas, instruction and training in addition to the donation of equipment for climbing are the basis for development of the proposed project has great goals for the year 2011. 

Climbing in Jibacoa

A new climbing area has been opened in Jibacoa, a few meters from the beach and very close to Campismo Los Cocos and Hotel Villa Loma.

The rock quality is excellent, these formations have the same origin and are part of the karst system of Jaruco, although the grips are often different. Sector access to the honeycombs are made from an open road near a small cottage located opposite the market, there has been marked by rocks the beginning of the road leading to the base of the rock, the approach is carried through the vegetation and is cleaned up a bit theway, while that has been gathering some rocks to serve as a guide. To reach the base of the wall must go up a small rise of land with lots of rocks that break off, so you have to consider this item and are recommended as support stems from the abundant vegetation and be very careful not dislodge rocks that reach those who come after.

The new routes in the Panales sector are:

  • Skala+ Cuba (7a+/b, 9 bolts), Jorge Luis “Gato” y Yarobis García
  • Hombre Plasticos Rutas plasticas (6c+, 8 bolts), Matthias Hummer

From the first moment the importance is seen to be the area for the development ofsport climbing in the provinces of La Habana, Matanzas and Mayabeque because the location is of great convenience and transportation is fairly simple.

Climbers who want to climb in Jibacoa are offered several options for accommodation, in the Campismo Los Cocos, as in the Hotel Villa Loma can find offers of accommodation to suit all groups and budget can be specifically Islazul renthouses in several rooms with relative costs from 15 to 40 CUC a day but canaccommodate large groups of visitors. Ensenada de Raúl: One of the most popular sectors is undoubtedly the Ensenada de Raul because it is less than 1 km from the center of Viñales and has routes that range from 6º-7º.

Campismo Dos Hermanas: Campismo Dos hermanas is a very convenient climbing area, located about 3 km from the center of Viñales and a few meters from the popular “Mural of Prehistory”. In the camping sector you can find routes of difficulty from 5 to 7a.

La Costanera: It is likely that the costanera was the first sector in which climbing was practiced in Cuba, here you can enjoy world-class routes and a wide range of difficulties.

Dopico: The Dopico Sector is a wonderful resource for those who want to vary a little bit the style of climbing because here you will find vertical and semi-slanting walls with big blunts.

Juaguayana: This sector is located to the left of Guajiro Ecológico, and consists of a wall less than 30m high that enjoys the Jagueyes that provide comfort to the climbers who visit it.

Guajiro Ecológico: The Guajiro Ecological Sector is one of the most frequented vertical walls in Viñales, this wall contains classic routes of great quality.

Ferroso: The Ferroso sector is named after the reddish color of its rock, it is located to the right of the Palenque sector.

Esquina Festival: This small wall was used in the 2006 difficulty competition. It is located right in front of the “Dos Hermanas” mogote.
